Detecting flat objects on conveyor belts

The Task

Very flat packaging, often in different colors, is transported on conveyor belts. In order for downstream processes such as counting, separating or ejecting to function properly, these objects must be reliably detected. A sensor is to monitor their presence independently of the height and color of the packaging.

The Challenge

Due to the very low height of the packaging, purely height-based detection cannot be carried out reliably in the dynamic conveying process. In addition, the color variance of the bags and packaging makes reliable detection difficult. Classic contrast sensors or photoelectric diffuse sensors quickly reach their limits here.

Our Solution

The DTECT® Color FT 55-CM is taught to detect the color of the conveyor belt (e.g. blue). During operation, the color sensor then detects any color deviation from that of the belt – i.e. reliably detects the items of packaging on it, regardless of their exact position. Even higher or differently colored objects are detected reliably, as the evaluation is based exclusively on the color feature.
